Both Bersih 2.0 and Patriot claims that their rally on July 9 is going to be a peaceful rally. How assured are we that everything is going to be fine on that day? My experience with several street demonstrations are proof that the word ‘peaceful’ could be thrown out the window at anytime during such events.
I’m pretty sure there will be some provocations and damages on public property, which means trouble to people who did not involved in the event.
Apparently, the leaders of both groups, S Ambiga and Khairy Jamaluddin, have received threats for their involvement in their respective planned rallies. However, there’s been more focus on Ambiga’s death threat compared to Khairy especially in the online news portals that are pro-Opposition such as Malaysiakini and
The Malaysian Insider.
I don’t know why, but it is clear that both portals support the Bersih 2.0 group. This proves to be contradictory to neutral stance of which both news portals claim to take, especially Malaysiakini.
The Umno Youth chief received a death threat through the short messaging service (sms) from an unidentified number which was directed to Umno Youth members intending to participate in a gathering planned on July 9. The words in the message included “to ‘slaughter’ Umno Youth members who are seen at the gathering”.
Despite the threat, until the Agong gave his statement against the rally, Umno Youth has declared that they will proceed with the rally to represent the ‘silent majority’ that is against Bersih 2.0 and support the Election Commission (EC). And as a response to the death threat, few hundreds of Patriot supporters gathered in front of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) headquarters in Tropicana.
Lets’ focus on the developments that in Umno recently. All this while we can see that the opposition has always staged street demonstrations, protests and many other actions including alleging Umno with various charges. And before this, we can also see that the senior Umno bunch has done little to retaliate. However, since 2010 Umno especially the youth wing has become more aggressive.
I don’t know whether it is a good or bad development but I would like to praise Khairy on his method in announcing Patriot. If you compare Patriot to Perkasa, I think the approach used by Khairy is wiser. He does not use provocation methods like what the Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali has chosen to take.
But, it didn’t matter how clever he is at choosing the words in making those provocative statements, the authorities have already issued a warning that stern action will be taken against any groups that gather on July 9. It means that if Patriot proceeds with their plan, there are against the government and the authorities.
And we could see that the authorities are serious this time about taking action against any parties as exemplified by the detaining Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) and Umno members in Penang last week.
Nobody knows what is going to happen this July 9. But one thing for sure is that the opposition cannot simply do anything they want anymore now that they are somewhat hindered by Umno as the latter will be responding quickly against every action taken by the former.
